ECONOMICS OF THE QUAKE

This is something we have heard quite a lot about and we are delighted to see that superb economist Brent Wheeler has done a really good analysis of the economic pluses and minuses of the Canterbury Quake. Its a really interesting blog and Brent has done a great job of telling something relatively complicated in a way that even blondes and brunettes can understand.

ITS TOUGH BEING POLLYANNA

The NZIER doesn't even try to put a gloss on their latest quarterly report. Pretty dire but a clear recommendation for the OCR to be dropped again to bolster consumer spending.

Anyway read the report here

FRAN DOESNT GO FAR ENOUGH

We have been quite gentle on the incoming government but it would be fair to say that we think that Fran does not go far enough in sharing her concerns of the lack of breadth of Nationals response to the Economic downturn. There are murmurs of disquiet rippling through Wellington and Auckland business communities. While Fran rightly points out that Nationals policy has been largely targeted at the construction sector we agree there is much more that can be done. We are watching very, very closely to what National will do in the IT sector, for instance.

Fibre to the home seems like such a worthy ideal but increasing business capability is where the effort should be targetted at. We again think this article in the NYT sets out the pitfalls succinctly

We also wonder if the Government has invited some companies to the Job summit who are new on the scene , who have grown in the last couple of years despite the downturn. They are the ones who are bucking the trend who will have the entrepreneurial thinkers at their helm. We hope that the Job summit is well managed but like Cactus Kate we are starting to wonder just what is so special about Weldon who apparently is a very uninspiring speaker and interestingly he does not have a huge amount of support throughout the business community. So as eye candy goes - he is a stawberry chuppa chuppa but as an inspirational leader - he apparently is a sugar free boiled lolly - someone even suggested " boring as batshit" . And in the next few weeks we need to see some inspirational leadership we have had glimpses of in the past , as our future more than anytime in the last 50 years, is in their hands.

So less of the dinners and photo ops and thinking inwards and relying on stale advisors who haven't been off the hill in ten years. We need to hear and understand your plan. We remain loyal but you need to work to keep our trust.

STIMULUS PACKAGE

Keys stimulus package is a good start - all good projects with lots of spin off benefits. Hosking will be pleased

HOSKING CALLS FOR FINESSE

And rightly so. Rob Hosking of the NBR , one of the smarter financial and economic journalists around the traps always offers a wise and considered opinion on the meaty issues. His article today on the Stimulus package is on the button. We dont need flashy - or we will get lots of inflation and that will put us into the death spiral we think that the US is headed for. We need smart thinking. Now girls know all about stimulus - its something that needs to be done with finesse and something that should not be done in a hurry.

GORDON BACKS A LOSER

WE hope that the Key administration doesnt head down the same path as the silly socialist Gordon Brown. . According to the UK Guardian It appears the UK central stimulus plank is about to go tits up. This sort of knee jerk stuff does not show a good understanding of business or what it really takes to create jobs.

INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY OR ROAD TO NOWHERE

Part of the US stimulus package is the seemingly laudable goal of funding broadband across the USA.

This article from the NY Times sounds a warning that needs to be heeded by our policy makers.

COME ON JOHN WE NEED SOME FOREPLAY

Has anyone else noticed the similarity between sex and the economic stimulus packages touted by world leaders ?
We have and as much as our elderly aunt - (see pic left) thinks that John Key is sexy, we think he is falling short on the stimulus package foreplay. So far the lead up to what National is going to do to excite the economy has been like a a bit of a fumble behind the bike sheds. So John , before we can get stimulated we need a bit of warming up. Time to start talking dirty to us to us big boy or we will lose interest
