NEW ZEALAND HAS LOST ITS FUNNY BONER

Bummer.

We can understand that the storm of international outrage over Paul Henry seemed so intense that there really was no option but for Paul Henry to either step aside or be sacked. That he resigned shows one of two things - that TVNZ finally got its shit together and stitched up a deal with Henry that included his resignation - leaving him looking magnanimous and contrite and ensuing the finger of blame flicked past Rick Ellis. The second is that Henry did it off his own bat sensing that TVNZ was going to axe him come Monday. That makes TVNZ look like a pack of wallies with no balls.

What would we have done if we were Rick Ellis? Toughed it out for another week. The media loves feeding off a good scandal but it will gorge itself when the dish of the day is one of their own.

The whole issue was maturing worldwide - we watched one broadcast where high placed Indian commentators reckoned that theirs was a far more racist country both internally and externally and that the Henry comments were nothing to get their turbans in a tangle over. Remember they still have a caste system over there.

People were starting to see sense on the issue. After the initial heat of the polarising debate more mature commentary would have dominated.

Sure Henry deserved some punishment and we thought a couple of weeks off air was about right. He was being a bit of a dickhead. But as we have said before, being a dickhead is part of his charm.

And despite the two top infotainment ringmasters, Sainsbury and Campbell, who both have a vested interest in seeing Henry gone, trying very hard to create programmes designed to put the nail in his broadcasting coffin, they failed. Simultaneous polls on both Close Up and Campbell Live clearly showed overwhelming support for Henry.

Why do they have a vested interest? Well Sainsbury is good but not as good as Henry or even Hoskings and getting one rival out of the road cements his position . Replacing Sainsbury was one of the industry's most talked about issues.

And of Campbell? For him its a ratings game. Chewing Henry up was always going to be a winner. Funnily though, the poll he ran indicated that there was probably more support for Henry as a broadcaster than Campbell could ever dream of. That would have been a kick in the arse for the pompous prick.

So we hope that Henry is not lost to NZ broadcasting. He is funny, erudite and surprisingly wise.

TV3 has a real chance to pick him up and boost their ratings - replace the sanctimonious Campbell and watch the viewers flock in.

And TVNZ should replace Sainsbury with the thinking journalists presenter and interviewer - Hoskings.

Clean broom and all that.

And the message for New Zealand? We are fasting becoming a nation of sanctimonious finger pointing, arse licking wankers. Shit, maybe we are British at our core after all.

UPDATE :

oh and a nice shot found by Cactus of that irredeemable racist Paul Henry..

HUMILITY

Why is that every wannabe and has been seeks  redemption on the public stage?

Latest actor with a cameo is Pam Corkery. Seems  latterly she has had her head stuck in a bottle instead of up her arse as she did when she was in parliament.

So now she wants to be the latest evangelist for overcoming an addiction...

What - ever.....

There is no great feat in a person who has a good job, status, money and mates overcoming adversity.

Desperation for public validation is not a source of inspiration

Conversely the person with no advantages who overcomes addictions or for that matter any shit the world chucks at them who then goes on  to become a great citizen - is in our books something  to be seriously admired.

MEDIA NEWS

Stephen Parker is leaving the very boring but worthy TV3 current affairs programme the Nation.

Great. He is waaay to intense. The show needs lightening up and Duncan Garner is the one to do it.
The baby faced boy has finally hit his straps. Now he is no intellectual giant and he doesn't have the wit or wisdom of Sean Plunket but he is bruising interviewer and gets to the nub of an issue pretty quickly and like Plunket he is happy to take a wack at all politicians no matter what their hue.

The Nation needed some fizz. Garner is just the bugger to give it shake up.

LEFTY HYPOCRITE GETS THE BIFF FROM HARMAN

Richard Harman rightly gets snotty on Facebook over Tom Frewen's NBR

(hard copy only) spew on a Harman produced programme.

Is the Tom Frewan who writes in NBR today complaining about Front Page getting NZ on Air money for "The Nation" the same trough gorging wanker who gets money from the Clerk of The House to produce a sanitised daily radio roundup of Parliament? Is he "In House Productions" himself gets $50,000 a year from NZ on Air for his audio Hansard to play on Radio Live? Is he a hypocrite? Yes, he is!

Sock it to the lefty tosser Richard, sock it to em .

QANTAS - PICKINS FOR ALL

We are delighted to see some mates and some people we genuinely admire get a Qantas, Like Phil Kitchin, Fran O'Sullivan and Audrey Young.

But shit with the depleting ranks of dead tree scribes, isn't it time the awards just centred on a few big awards instead a catagory for everything from the best story on pimple popping to how to wash your undies?

Disclaimer - and no we never won a Qantas and yes we did enter from time to time. But we have won other stuff.

And we agree with Cactus
- its time for some blogging awards.

OLD BASTARD BUT A SMART BASTARD

We like the NBR online site. Its fast paced news style has it leading the pack on breaking business and political stories. ( we also receive no revenue from NBR, so its just pure professional admiration, just in case you are wondering but we think they need a feisty unpc blogger like Cactus Kate to liven things up a bit..) Then today NBR announced a new service which will worry Scoop. Its a press release service " From the horses mouth. Unedited press releases up on a an easy accessible site for all to see. Brill.

So to Barry Colman - we salute you - old and curmudgeonly you may be but you can still sniff the breeze and know where the wind is coming from.

COME BACK NICK

Phil Kitchin remains the undisputed king of investigative journalism in this country but it appears there is a former NZ journalist who has made an international name for himself for unrelenting truth seeking.

The Herald reports this morning that one of their former reporters, Nick Perry, has won the coveted George Polk award for sports reporting - uncovering a dark and sinister side to American Pro football.

The George Polk Awards have in the past been scooped up by such literary luminaries as Norman Mailer and Christine Amanpour.

He and his co writer Ken Armstrong were also finalists for the Medill Medil of Courage Journalism Award

And they also won the Micheal Kelly Award for Journalism.

REALLY CRAP JOURNALISM

We expect better. This story in the Herald should read -

Press Release from Corrections on Prison Drug Rates.

New figures released by the Department of Corrections show the number of prisoners using drugs has hit a record low.

Acting prison services assistant general manager Leanne Field said the number of prisoners returning positive results after being randomly tested had plummeted to 10.5 per cent, the lowest rate ever recorded across all prisons in New Zealand.

"This is a major achievement given that 34 per cent of prisoners tested positive when testing began in the late 1990," Mrs Field said.

She said the reduction had been achieved through ongoing investment and improvement in prison security, and enhanced visitor and prisoner searching.

"We also undertake regular searches with our 12 drug dog teams and have a highly skilled intelligence team who work to stop criminal activities within prison."

Mrs Field said getting further declines was a challenge as prisoners and their associates in the community were inventive in identifying ways to smuggle contraband into prison.

She said there was also a focus on reducing the demand for drugs in prison through treatment clinics.

- NZPA

Come on = both the Herald, and NZPA who put the story out could have done better.
- some of the questions that need to be asked are:
  1. How many years has the Department been gathering statistics on random drug testing?
  2. What percentage of the prison population is drug tested?
  3. What prisons are tested?
  4. What drugs are the tests used for?
  5. Has the survey changed over time?
  6. What ratio of males and females are tested?
  7. What type of tests are used?
  8. What are the punishments for positive drug tests?
  9. What segment of the prison population are tested? Minimum, medium or maximum security ?
  10. How is the "randomness" of testing decided?
Simple stuff really. Readers deserve more. Journalists need to do more probing.
We just find it interesting that "P" probably wasn't even registering in 1990 - It certainly wasn't when we were working for Corrections in a medium security prison.
So we smell a rat.. a big stinky PR spinning rat.

CHERISH WAS NOT KILLED BY ST JOHNS

This headline in the Dominion is a crock.

"Cherish dies after St Johns Delay"

So there may have been delays and thats bad. But she was killed by human hand not some systemic fault.

So while St Johns may have some questions to answer, they did not kill her. Her death sentence had already been dished out by the person who bashed her tiny head in.

The Dominion needs a kick in the arse for the way they have portrayed this story.
Crap journalism, crap speculation and it takes the focus away from the perpetrator of this heinous crime.

TIME TO LANCE THE BOYLE?

We are more and more turning to the NBR for up to the minute biz news and commentary. Today is this very funny insight from Allan Swann into how Fonterra's communications czars handled the half year result.

NBR has the story her
e

Here's an excerpt

6) Sit through a relatively easy press conference, reading almost word for word from said press release.

7) Make up absurd reasons why the 'results' were late and provided incomplete, during phone conference question time.

Blame either:
a) An earlier boardroom meeting that ran over time

b) That some journalists' email accounts can't accept email attachments.

8) After complaints from journalists, provide balance sheet data – by email in an attachment – at 12.53PM – nearly two hours past deadline.

9) Wonder why your company engenders suspicion from shareholders, the fourth estate and the general public.

THIS IS A CROCK

Come on TVNZ get hard. This guy does not deserve any favours -
TVNZ has decided to pull the Graeme Burton episode of Beyond the Darklands which takes a l;ook at our worst murderers.

Bloody silly really, when you think of all the coverage that is on the TV news leading up to trials - We wonder how many stories on David Bain were screened or published in the weeks leading up to his trial and even during the trial? It included this one on Bains love interests or this one about tee shirts

Silly wimpy buggers.

IN DEFENCE OF DOING WHATWE LIKE

Well it seems that Cactus Kate needs to research the net before she uses cute terms. Burnt Sperm apparently refers to something rather ugly.

While she has shocked her mother we apparently have pissed off some of the visitors to Roarprawn with our gossip posts. Tough. Its our blog - its called suspense and we enjoy watching people work it out or the journos who write for a living go off and do a decent story.

So Gomango - you are right its Hone and its a story the journos should chase - if he can bring together some pan party Maori initiatives then he should be applauded and he deserves more coverage for it than in our lowly little blog. we work in another industries these days so dont have the resources to devote full time to nailing the Scampi scandal. Maybe Rodney will pick it up where he left it off last year. We know that there is still plenty of material around that will keep the stench rising from the scampi scandal and we have devoted a few hours to nutting out a novel that has been triggered by the story.
So wemake no apologies for writing gossip posts from time to time. They are written to make you think and keep you in suspense and if your emotions are being ignited by them then they are successful. Remember its our blog and it you dont like it dont read it. But its amazing how many people email with the answers.
And we are not insiders. Not even close. Just mates of a lot of people who are.

So sorry boyo but the gossipy bits will surface on Roarprawn from time to time as is our want.

DUMB AND DUMBER

We are getting heartly sick of the media hyping up the rip off couple who defrauded, stole, lied and cheated their way across the country at what now appears to be at the taxpayers expense. Calling them Bonnie and Clyde accords them cult status that they do not deserve. They are a pair of no good, low down, low lifes, Dumb and dumber. Shame they have children.
