A TEASER - THE MEURANT CHRONICLES

Its August 1999 - A bitter winter chills the National Party as they face the prospect of losing the looming election.

Ross Meurant is working for Philip Vela. Vela is one of the great pioneers of the New Zealand Deep Sea Fishery - he is a big man who likes getting his own way fast. He is a heavy weight in the Fishing Industry Association the FIA - the big quota owners of the industry. The FIA was to have been dissolved with the formation of the inclusive Seafood Industry Council ( Seafic.) However they don't and for a while there is an internal war within the Seafood industry for power.

Meurant, employed specifically to get traction on some big ticket policy items for Vela reports on his progress each week. We have copies of those reports and screeds of other correspondence on a number of issues, about fishing, tax, the Rodney district council and other stuff like the insiders guide to NZ First. More on that soon.

The job Meurant was tasked to do for Vela was what became known as the " UN fish issue" a crap piece of legislation that put New Zealand flagged vessels at a disadvantage. Seafic was lobbying on the same issue.

So Meurant lobbied , as he was paid to do for Vela - the Leader of United NZ Peter Dunne to vote against the bill and the contentious UN clause.

Dunne, on the 16th of August 1999 states the Meurant position in a press release and calls on the government to " think again" on the bill.

However, Meurant gets sidetracked and instead of just lobbying politicians on the issue he takes a crack at a couple of the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council senior staff. In an effort to curry favour, he tells his boss he is going to discredit some of the Seafic staff knowing it will be music to Vela's ears.

From the Meurant report dated 22 August 1999

"In respect of my feeding a "scare" into the system i.e making it known that I have material on both ( John) Valentine ( the then CE of Seafic) and (Tony ) Craig (the then head of policy and strategy) relating to their competence and integrity respectively, this is just to remind them they don't have all the muskets. A calculated initiative you might speculate, but I don't have anything to lose. "

His final note at the end of the report is this:

Note: I appreciate it is not my money I am dealing with when I make suggestions such as follows but I do believe that there is much merit in providing Peter Dunne with $5000 towards his election campaign fund. It would be helpful for me on Wednesday if I were in a position to advise him that a donation had been approved.
Who said politician was not a dirty word!

Dunne was paid the $5000 in October 1999. Despite putting out the press release he eventually voted for the bill.
Dunne denied being paid for policy to both to the Dominion and in this curious interview he did with local journalism students on the issue.

For the record we worked with both Valentine and Craig. They are both highly competent and men of integrity.

Is there more? - yes.

YAYYYYY ! ITS STILL about scampi!

Rodney is reported in today's Dominion Post to be calling for the SFO to interview Ross Meurant.

BustedBlonde could not agree more . and funnily enough there are people who are now starting to come forward - trying to help .. Busted Blonde isnt going to give up the fight for justice easily and remember boys and girls email Bustedblonde at bustedblonde@gmail.com if you want to give Roarprawn info that could be useful.

The Blonde has been hearing the rustling of paper bags among the Olive Trees... Where will it lead??????

And this from Wellington Hive and Queen Bee she says:

This would of course bring the whole scampi scandal back into consideration. We hear that Meurant might be in London and there are some who believe that if immunity from prosecution is offered, then Meurant will be willing to bleat.
The Serious Fraud Office inquiry into donations to NZ First leader Winston Peters will lack credibility if his former adviser and bagman, Ross Meurant, is not interviewed, ACT leader Rodney Hide says.

The SFO is investigating substantial donations to NZ First by heavyweight Waikato racing and fishing operators the Vela family, and a $25,000 donation to the formerly secretive Spencer Trust by Sir Robert Jones.

Mr Meurant, a former National MP, worked as a taxpayer-paid adviser to Mr Peters from 1999 till 2004 and NZ First sources have told The Dominion Post that he collected substantial donations for the party from the Velas.

In that time he was also involved in a business with senior Vela family figure Philip Vela.

Mr Meurant resigned from his advisory role with Mr Peters when it was revealed that he was in a business relationship with Simunovich Fisheries while advising Mr Peters on a select committee inquiry into scampi quota received by Simunovich Fisheries.

Mr Hide, who complained to the SFO about the Vela and Sir Robert Jones donations after they were revealed by The Dominion Post in July, said: "It is very clear to me that Ross Meurant is pivotal to any investigation of donations ... particularly from the Velas and fishing and racing interests."For the SFO inquiry to be credible it would have to speak to Mr Meurant "if it hasn't already done so".Mr Meurant is believed to be overseas.

wonderful side show - but bigger fish to fry.

The Owen Glenn donation saga has been a wonderful side show to the main game and thats corruption.

Winston will be sacked - either late tonight or tomorrow depending on when the vote for the ETS legislation is taken.

All the Glenn privileges saga has shown is that Winston is a liar.

The Serious Fraud office and the police and the electoral commission will prove corruption.

A couple of predictions - it will emerge that Philip Vela has been running the whole show.

So what did Winston do to piss the big guy off. Or was Vela just sick of a Labour government and wanted a change and just felt like seeing if he could make it happen?

You see Vela was well known in the seafood industry for being a power broker -

He was one of the most influentual members of what was known as the G10 - a group that existed but didn't - because COMMCOMM could have had a go at them for collusionary practicies.

And while the heat of the next few days will be centred around the donations scandal , it is to be hoped that the paper trail indicates what we all knew a few years back - and that was Winnie got cash for changing the course of the scampi inquiry.

So this saga wont just stop with the resignation of Winston Peters - it has only just started...

PRAWNS SWIM IN CHAMAPGNE.

Today is the day Roarprawn and Bustedblonde hoped would come. We got word late last night that Phil Kitchin was to break the Winston - Vela donation scandal wide open. We posted the picture of Euminedes at midnight.

There is nothing in the stories that surprises us. We knew all along what had happened, we just never had enough documentation.

Years ago, one of the Prawns had a conversation with Philip Vela about working with politicians and making sure that they did their best for the Seafood industry.
Velas comments were chilling.
He said simply - "Dont worry about Winston - I own him."

We never forgot it and, as the years past , like so many others, we saw Winston for what he was - corrupt.

Congratulations to Phil Kitchin .

Now I just hope that every branch of Grey Power get out there and says to its members to think very carefully before they vote.
Our country is largely corruption free and if Winston is not returned to parliament it will remain so.

SFO needs to talk to Meurant

Rodney Hide has done a wonderful job of bringing a lot of information to the attention of the SFO.

  • While the focus to date is on the Glenn and the Vela donations, the SFO must not lose sight of the fact that the key to unravelling the Vela and Simunovich is Ross Meurant.

No doubt he will be looking for payment to stay quiet, from the people who need to keep him quiet. And there are a few of them.

Meurant holds the key to the closet where the skeletons are stacked up in a considerable heap.

So why did Ian Fraser meet with Meurant at the time of the TVNZ Crapper Tape?

How much did Meurant get paid to “go away?”

    Where is he now?

Why isn’t the news media chasing down the heart of the Winston story?

And will John Key call for the SFO to broaden its inquiry?

it needs to be printed in full - here is Kiwiblogs analysis

What Farrar reckons happened

I blogged yesterday on what Winston claims happen. It is fit only as a bedtime story for five year olds, or the Prime Minister.

Today I am going to blog what I think actually happened, and how Winston created this trouble for himself. This is based on the evidence to date, and some guesswork.

He started off only being hypocritical, but in hiding that hypocrisy he eventually told a lie, and then to cover that lie up, he had to tell many many more.
Here is my timeline of events:
In August 2005 Peters asked for a meeting with Glenn. They met, and then his staffer Roger McClay asked for a donation to NZ First which was declined. It is fascinating that NZ First tried to solicit money from Labour’s largest donor prior to the 2005 election. One can speculate on why they thought this would be productive and whether this indicated they had already decided to back Labour, but that is not germane.
In late November 2005 a staffer (probably Roger McClay) approached Glenn again for a donation to the petition. That staffer probably had the discussion with Glenn, that Henry claims he had. They do not want to reveal that it is probably Roger McClay as the thought of Winston not knowing the fundraising details of his own staff is even more unlikely than their other stories.
In December 2005 Peters directly solicited a donation for the Tauranga electoral petition, pretty much the way Owen Glenn describes it with a phone call on 5 December, another call after that, and then the 14 December call. All the evidence supports this. The reason Glenn now said yes is because he saw it as helping Labour, and he checked with Mike Williams who said it would not be unhelpful.
Peters obviously took the call from Glenn, and then told Henry to send the bank account details.
The request to Glenn to keep the donation confidential was important. The NZ First brand was built on anti big business donations, and accepting $100,000 for legal expenses would weaken their brand.
If Glenn had said yes to the original request to donate to NZ First, then that would have been paid to the Spencer Trust I am sure. It was vital that the public never know of the funding from big business. Peters and Henry had constructed things very carefully so they could avoid disclosure (arguably) legally. At this stage nothing has been done wrong, save the hypocrisy and maybe the failure to disclose on the Register of Interests (the way they structured it gives them an arguable case though).
Then on 15 February 2008, Owen Glenn revealed he had donated to another political party (which is how he saw it). That got some minor interest in the media as to which other party.
Even worse on 19 February 2008 he revealed he was in line to become Honorary Consul to Monaco, that Helen had already approved it, and he was just waiting for Winston to “get off his arse and do the paperwork”.
At this point Peters would have realised it would be a bad look if the public realised Glenn had donated $100,000 to benefit Peters, and he was under consideration for Consul. Plus it undermines their no big donor brand. So he would be worried. But as long as Glenn kept the confidence it was al okay. Only Peters and Henry (and maybe McClay) knew of the donation. The media could guess but could not prove.
But then disaster struck in the form of Dail Jones on 20 February 2008. He revealed to the media that there had been a large mystery donation to NZ First in December 2007 and that it was closer to $100,000 than $10,000. Owen Glenn also refused to rule out donating to NZ First, saying through his PR firm that people should speak to the party. This created huge media interest.
Now people (including me) started adding 2+2 together to get 5, and thought the December 2007 donation was from Owen Glenn. Peters furiously denied it. Peters was right ironically.
Peters was furious as the allegation was wrong. There were two secret donations - not one. And Dail Jones had accidentally come close to exposing both of them. The allegation that the Nov 2007 donation was from Owen Glenn was wrong, but to prove it wrong would have meant revealing the Spencer Trust. No wonder he was furious at Jones (to be fair to Jones he just told the truth and if you run a secret trust without your Party President in the loop, you run the risk he may blunder into it)
Now again at this stage no lies had been told. It was all hypocritical but Peters denials had been correct.
The next day Helen talks to Owen Glenn and he informs her of the donation. She rings Peters and he denies it to her. Now probably in Peters’ mind he did not lie, only deceive. He would have been careful to use language which ruled out a donation to the party or to him, but not to his legal fees.
The fact he doesn’t contact Glenn to ask what this is about, is incidentially proof he obviously knew. If he did not know, he would have asked. Now again at this stage no major lie, just some deception.
On 24 February he does another half lie denying there was any mystery donation at all. In fact there was - from the Spencer Trust. Peters probably justifies this because the Spencer Trust is not a mystery to him, and he knows the $80,000 was made up of individual Vela cheques of $10,000 into the trust, so in his mind there was no big anonymous donation.
On 28 February 2008 we have the infamous “No” press conference. In hindsight this was a fatal mistake. By going so over the top, he cut off his wriggle room for later. He thought he was on safe ground denying Owen Glenn donated to NZ First, but he also said No to Guyon Espiner saying “Can I just clarify with you. Are you saying you have never received one dollar from Owen Glenn or any associate of Owen Glenn” and that was right on the edge of being a lie. The trouble with having a big No prop, is you can’t suddenly stop using it, so he waved the No sign again. A big mistake.
Now at this stage Peters has not told a fully formed lie - many half lies, but he looks to have got away with his denials as no one asked exactly the right question. Again it is because Peters knew exactly what the donation was about, that he could so carefully deny it.
Then in July 2008 someone leaked to Audrey Young the e-mails between Owen Glenn and Steve Fisher where Glenn says “Steve - are you saying I should deny giving a donation to NZ First?? When I did?”. She published these on 12 July 2008.
Peters responds that Glenn did not donate to NZ First. This is technically true. Glenn referred to NZ First when he should have said Winston’s legal bills. Winston is a great nit picker and puts huge reliance on the difference. At this stage again no outright lie from Peters.
But he again becomes his own worst enemy when on 14 July he attacks the NZ Herald can calls on Tim Murphy and Audrey Young to resign. He offers them a look at the party books. He does this because he knew the donation went into Brian Henry’s account. But he is most unfair in attacking the Herald. He knows that email is from Owen Glenn, and they reported it in good faith. It is not the Herald’s fault that Glenn used loose language around his donation. His attack is over the top and Peters at his worst. It is one thing to deny the accuracy of the e-mail by playing semantic games, but it is another thing to try and take the moral high ground as Peters did.
On the 16th of July he again reassures Clark again there has been no donation to NZ First. Still not lying (but certainly deceiving) as the donation was to his legal fees.
Around this time Peters and Henry would be terrified that Glenn will eventually speak to a journalist and reveal details of his donation. The Herald also prints a further leaked letter from Glenn to Peters and they must wonder what else is still to emerge. I have little doubt phone records will show them in constant communication that week. So they decide to pre-empt it by announcing it on 18 July 2008.
That day Peters’ mother dies. I do not think so badly of them that they choose to announce it that day because of her death. I think they had already decided on that day (Peters had been overseas and they wanted to do it when he was back in NZ) and decided to carry on, even after she died. That’s still pretty low though. With the NZF conference starting the next day they needed to get it out of the way.
Peters and Henry had a big big choice ahead of them. Do they reveal that Peters knew of the donation? They could argue that he had never denied a donation to his legal fees. Technically he had never lied until then - only deceived. But Peters would know that having waved that no sign around at the press conference and called on the Herald staff to resign and apologise, he would get somewhat crucified if he revealed he was playing at semantics and he did know of a donation - but it was to his legal fees, not him or his party (as he saw it). Ironically in hindsight that would have been the path of less pain.
So they made a fatal mistake. They told a bare faced lie. They both did. On 18 July 2008 they announced that Brian Henry only informed him of this at 5 pm that day. Peters explictly said that up until then he had been “unaware of the source of any of the donations for legal expenses”. That was the start of the end. Up until then they were only half lies, or deceptions (in politics there is a difference).
They had to ten resort to further lies, to back up the big lie. How did Henry get in touch with Owen Glenn? On 20 July they claimed a tip off from someone whose name Henry could not recall, but was not Peters or Mike Williams. Another deception which turned into a lie. They probably mean McClay, and he probably was involved at first but as the e-mails and phone calls prove Peters was in the loop the whole time. It was not a case of McClay or Peters knowing - they both did.
Incidentially on 21 July the Vela donations came to light, but that is a story for another day.
Peters lied again on 25 July when he said in a written statement “The Glenn contribution went to my barrister Brian Henry. As soon as I learned of it I informed the Prime Minister and alerted the media.” Once you tell one lie, you have to keep lying.
Peters and Henry both lied again to the Privileges Committee on 19 August 2008, saying again he never knew of the donation. Note neither of them gave testimony under oath, so they can not be done for perjury.
Henry also claimed on 19 August “I phoned Owen Glenn and he forwarded $100,000 which was paid to me on account of my fees”. This has been proven false. Glenn phoned Peters.
Owen Glenn’s letter was published on 26 August 2008, along with one from Peters’ respomding to it. Peters again lies repeating that he had no knowledge of any donation.
On 28 August Helen Clark reveals she knew back in February 2008 of the donation, from Owen Glenn.
On 4 September another Glenn letter is published. He details the phone call and e-mail. Peter Williams tables a statement claiming Brian Henry spoke to Owen Glenn on two occassions.
On 9 September Glenn testifies and provides proof of the phone call from him to Peters and the e-mail seven minutes later from Brian Henry.
On 10 September, Peters testifies again. Peters admits to conversation with Glenn but denies money discussed.
On 16 September Henry testified again. He admits that the client in the e-mail was Peters but still insists somehow Peters never knew of the donation. Phone records also prove Peters called Henry straight after the Glenn phone call.
I am pretty confident that this is close to what happened. It explains everything. Peters at first did not lie but he then realised he had gone too far in playing semantic games with the media to reveal he knew of a donation to his lawyer. So on 18 July he told a lie. And that one lie on 18 July led to dozens and dozens more lies as they tried to concoct a story about how Glenn could have donated without Peters knowing. I suspect they also exchanged conversations with McClay for conversations with Henry.
The moral of the story is the same as for Richard Nixon - it is the cover-up that gets you in the end!

Phew, NZ isn't a banana republic.

Wow ,

Roarprawns faith in the NZ justice system has been restored - my pick is the shredders, and delete keys will be working overtime - Those involved would not have been expecting that this day would come. They would have thought that all the hush money and the threats would have stopped this from ever getting this far.

While the SFO have said they will turn their attention on those involved on the Glenn and Vela donations, this inquiry will open the door on other issues.

Roarprawn called for justice and an inquiry that could find the truth and that has been answered. That was all that was asked for.

She is well pleased.

Winston Gone

Well that was a bit of a damp squib - I'M gobsmacked he didn't have more crap to spin but perhaps Winston's attention is on far weightier issues. Remember this is a side show - the real action still rests with the SFO, the police and to a lesser extent the Electoral commission.

So whats still to be answered?

Where were Winnies Lawyers?

Are they over doing Pro bono?

Whats in the NZ First bank accounts?

Why did Winnie pay money back to MFat after a side trip to Las Vegas and who did he meet there ?

Can people hear Vela laughing all the way from Geneva?

Who is and what does Tommy Gear do ?

Is the PM a lying cow?

Why does Winnie support boxing?

Anyone eaten scampi and not had indigestion lately?

Is Onassis laughing up in the clouds?

Are there enough old tena pad wearers who still believe in Winston to get him back into parliament again?

Can Winston hear the clink of prison keys when he lays his head down at night?

Where is the best place for the Roarprawns to have a party?

Monday, 1 December 2008

BIG QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

1)Remember the story that appeared in the Herald a couple of days after the election, that never really got legs because Key stitched together a govt faster than a Hong Kong Tailor can stitch together a suit, about the $100k that Vela gave both NZ First and Labour ?Well what we want to know is who is going to keep a track on what Winston does with it?

2) We know there are at least 4 more interviews with grumpy scampi skippers - when are they going to end up on U Tube?

3) How long will it be before we see the results on the inquiry into the Immigration /shane Jones/ Bill Liu passport for donation allegations?

4) Will there be any good stories being written after National has poached all the good journalists?

5) How many Ministers told Department CE's that their briefings to incoming Ministers were crap?

6) Which Wellington property developer has skiddy undies as the defaults on various transactions start to pile up?

7) Which PR company is so desperate to curry favour with its clients that its offering one hour " one on one insider briefings" to CE's for free even though they were Labour pets and have F***k all contacts in National?

8) How many massive government departments comms teams went through "restructuring" in the last 6 months and renamed some of their staff as information management or knowledge management, or other such weasel terms in an effort to hide them from any National departmental review?

9) Why were a bunch of Maori getting out of a Crown Car on the Wharf last Thursday when there was no Minister around? If it was good enough for Dame Whina to walk why can't they ?

10) Who wasn't at St Johns Bar on Friday Night Basking in the sun and does this mean that the " Drycleaners ( Dockside where you go to get a Suit) finally has some serious Friday night competition as the place to be seen and pick up a lazy shag on Friday night?

and yes big questions of the week will be a regular feature - feel free to send us contributions - bustedblonde@gmail.com

  • Winnies fucked

at the end of proceedings Owen Glen said he didnt want to be known as the "man who shot Liberty Valance. " that would be lost on many young journos - it was a reference to an old western.

good western - great song ....

He was right he didnt shoot him = he blew him away with a couple of sticks of semtex.

anyway heres the lyrics of the old song..

When Liberty Valance rode to town the womenfolk would hide, they'd hide
When Liberty Valance walked around the men would step aside'cause the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood
When it came to shootin' straight and fast---he was mighty good.>
From out of the East a stranger came, a law book in his hand, a man
The kind of a man the West would need to tame a troubled land'cause the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood
When it came to shootin' straight and fast---he was mighty good.
Many a man would face his gun and many a man would fallThe man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty Valance
He was the bravest of them all.
The love of a girl can make a man stay on when he should go, stay on
Just tryin' to build a peaceful life where love is free to grow
But the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understoodWhen the final showdown came at last, a law book was no good.
Alone and afraid she prayed that he'd return that fateful night, aww that night
When nothin' she said could keep her man from goin' out to fight
From the moment a girl gets to be full-grown the very first thing she learns
When two men go out to face each other only one retur-r-r-ns
Everyone heard two shots ring out, a shot made Liberty fall
The man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty ValanceHe was the bravest of them all.
The man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty ValanceHe was the bravest of them all.

the mysterious NZ party finances just get mysteriouser

Well, well it get curiouser and curiouser - the NZ First troika.

David Fisher writes an article in the Listener that again raises some very interesting machinations of the NZ First party machine which appears to be split into 3. Well worth a read.

There is still much more to come in the scampi saga - more paper trails , and there is talk of some ink drying on some pretty explosive affidavits .

some questions for the MSM journalists.

Where is Ross Meurant?
Has anyone asked Brian Deadman what he did with his scampi quota?
What did Winston Peters say to Neil Penwarden outside the fisheries select committee hearing into the scampi quota that left him shaken?
Why did Winston get rid of Doug Woolerton off the committee and was it before or after Velas empire gave him a $150k?
How many of Winstons original backers still back him and of those who dont why wont they ?
Does Tommy Gear know the Vela's?

Who is the latest person to give some paperwork to the Serious Fraud office?

Who was Winstons big South Island backer?

And who said " I own him" and why?

CLARK CALLS TIME ON WINSTON

Clark has finally conceded NZ First are in trouble. Now she wants their votes. How venal. Expect some dirt on Labour to filter out in the next few days as Winston gets his final revenge. Anderton, as well has hinted darkly about Winston and United Future blocking fisheries legislation after the Dominion revealed they both had received money from fishing magnate Philip Vela. Anderton should be very careful - we can hear whispers in the wind as it blows through the trees. We think that if NZ First voters have any sense and we think they do, they should vote for National.

COMING SOON.... EXCLUSIVE - THE MEURANT CHRONICLES

We have had a pretty laid back weekend. Our knee is buggered. So we have been resting up - hoping that it might get a bit better but an operation is looking increasingly likely.

However we have been busy. We have been reading the Meurant Chronicles.

Late last week - in time honoured form we received a parcel of documents.

Euminedes perhaps?

Essentially they are the reports and emails of Ross Meurant while he was employed by Vela fishing at the same time he was employed by Winston Peters.

They are illuminating , sometimes funny, occasionally revealing and often outrageous.

They also mark what we believe were the last days of the worst years of the seafood industry.

They are the documents that Phil Kitchin used as the basis of his expose on Winston Peters a story that broke in the Dominion a couple of days before the election in 2008 on November 1.

Anyway in the next few weeks we are going to release them. As we should - in the name of transparency and openness and history - they relate to the late 1990's and the 2000's.

So everyone can read them and draw their own conclusions.

They will keep political junkies happy for days.

And don't worry - the documents are safe.. very safe.

DID VELA "OWN" MORE THAN ONE MP?

Apparently. According to Stuff this morning Mr Dunne was a recipient of Velas largesse - What is really disturbing is Mr Dunnes selective memory. We remember the events pretty well. It was a very interesting time. We learnt a lot.
And it appears that Winstons memory is as holey as swiss cheese as well. We find it amazing that anyone can forget about flying in an helicopter and as Peter Talleys helicopter is pretty flash it would be pretty hard to forget flying in it. Or Velas chopper which had lovely leather seats in it - BB never forgot flying in Velas helicopter. We know him as a very generous man with a wonderful wine cellar and a lovely wee boat. Oh look! the Herald has a pic of the chopper! Maybe that will help Winston remember.

We also agree with the Greens - there is a need for an inquiry.

And we have been asked to moderate our language here at RoarPrawn by the Old Tassy devil - so we will - but we want to ask one more question - Where they bloody hell is the SFO?????

And we havent forgotten Hoki and a wee few bits and pieces which will no doubt see the light of day this week. We have just been a bit busy gardening and perusing old documents. Trouble is when they fade a bit they are hard to read. And there is just sooo many of them.

LABOUR DIGS DIRT THAT NEEDS CARBON DATED.

The Herald reckons it has a news story that exposes Key in someway - It may be a very old history lesson - but that's about all - Key was about 26 at the time of the supposed " incidents" involving the H -fee issue of two decades ago.

And it appears his biggest crime is that he had lunch with a dodgy bugger who may have been part of the financial scam.

Funny isn't it, how Labour Party President Mike Williams with his fat cat salaries that must total - around $150k plus - has the time to try and dig a bit of mud on John Key - bloody hell Labour must be desperate.

So lets see how many dodgy buggers we have had lunch with over the years. And this list is by no means exhaustive.

Well when BB was a bit younger:

  • A couple of wandering husbands, names withheld to protect their children.
  • Two bent coppers.
  • John Tamihere
  • The bloke who used to distrubute the drugs for Mr Suburban the mate of Mr Asia.
  • A high profile trade unionist who got into a bit of shit in Russia who made Bill Anderson and Sonya Davies very grumpy and who was also a very very close friend of Annette King.
  • Winston - often, and he never paid and we have the receipts to prove it.
  • Johnny Glozier - with Winston at Nicolinis.
  • Vela, Talley, - not dodgy but they are bloody cunning.
  • At least three gang leaders , one black power, one mongrel mob and a couple of white power crime bosses including one called Nigger Joe.
  • On Friday nights at the Wellesley Club we used to have a few beers and dinner with the odd struck off lawyer or two. ( names withheld to ensure we still get good legal advice for nothing.)
  • A murderer or two. - Long story - crimes of passion.
So if having lunch with a few interesting people from time to time is a crime - then string me and thousands of other New Zealanders up on the nearest tree.

EUMENIDES

We love helicopters ands we are still giggling over the fact that it was one that stopped the red tide in its tracks. It was Eumenides providing the documented proof of the relationship between Peters, Meurant and the Velas in the form of a helicopter that was the final nail in the Axis coffin. It was Peters denial of the use of that helicopter and the subsequent pictures of the said helicopters that resonated with voters who finally realised their political god had clay feet. Peters was Clarks last hope and Eumenides last furious stroke smote him down and took her with him.

We think that Eumenides should be in the New Years Honours list for services to the nation.

And if you think that Vela is left wing - think again - the $200,000 he donated to the Axis that was Peters and Clark was just play money. And he loves playing.

SFO FINDS NO FRAUD BUT SOME MAJOR ISSUES AROUND "OTHER: BREACHES"

NZ Herald has this

The Serious Fraud Office investigation into NZ First has found no fraud but says other laws may have been broken.

The SFO announced in August that it was to investigate donations to NZ First from Sir Robert Jones and the Vela family to find out whether they were used for the purposes the donors intended.

Despite finding no fraud, Director Grant Liddell said the laws relating to electoral returns may not have been complied with.

"The SFO investigation has determined that there is no basis for the laying of fraud charges relating to the donations that were channelled through the Spencer trust," Mr Liddell said.

"The way they were dealt with does raise questions about other possible breaches."

NZ First leader Winston Peters has always denied any wrongdoing and said it would take "about five minutes" to exonerate his party.

Much to be expected really but its time for the " other possible breaches to be dealt with"

Clark says she would reinstate him if he was found innocent by the SFO, so we will watch with interest to see if she lied or will reinstate him.

Hoki - bad men, ugly fish - big story.. Meurant comes in from the cold

This mornings revelation by ace reporter Phil Kitchin is music to the prawns... Meurant has the goods on a lot of powerful people.

And he is right Hoki was the first scandal - and Winston has his fingers covered in fishguts on this one as well.

So what is the Hoki story?

Well its about a corrupt fisheries officer, tender documents and South Island fishing interests...

You will read more about it over the next few days

This from Stuff

I am not avoiding SFO, says Meurant
Ross Meurant, a former adviser to NZ First leader Winston Peters, has broken his silence and says he is willing to speak to the Serious Fraud Office about the Winston Peters affair when he returns from overseas.

We hope that the SFO is on on a plane this morning.

Mr Meurant was NZ First's donations bagman from 1999 to 2004, and collected substantial donations from the Vela family, high-powered fishing and racing operators.
Those donations and a $25,000 donation from Sir Robert Jones to the formerly secretive Spencer Trust are under scrutiny by the SFO inquiry into Mr Peters.

In a written statement to The Dominion Post, Mr Meurant said he was breaking his silence "to refute categorically any innuendo that I am avoiding the SFO to protect Winston Peters and/or fish industry magnates" he was associated with.

Glad to hear that he isnt willing to protect any scumbags anymore ... Good on you Ross.

The former National Party MP and police inspector - who was second in charge of the Red Squad during the 1981 Springbok tour - also alleges he received a "menacing threat" by a "powerful fishing industry figure" while advising Mr Peters.

No sympathy for Meurant here - he threatened me and many many others in the Seafood industry.

Mr Meurant resigned from his advisory role when it was revealed he was in a business relationship with Simunovich Fisheries while advising Mr Peters for a 2003 parliamentary select committee inquiry into scampi quota allocation.

Well bugger me - I wonder who helped orchestrate that? :-)

His statement appears to have been prompted by ACT leader Rodney Hide's statement on Saturday that the SFO inquiry would not be credible if Mr Meurant was not interviewed.
He said Mr Meurant was "pivotal to any investigation of donations, particularly from the Velas and fishing and racing industries".

Absolutely

Mr Meurant said he was only speaking about the affair because "Mr Hide and you have unnecessarily dragged me into the debate and by innuendo will cause some to question my integrity".

Well Ross the only way you can retain any integrity is to tell the truth and soon.

He said he had not been avoiding the SFO but had been in Morocco and Eastern Europe on business and to comply with his tax status.

What is it with these guys and their tax status?

"When I return to New Zealand I will meet with the SFO if they wish to speak to me, but there will be no public discourse by me should that event transpire."

As it should be - we are sure the SFO will tell all in good time -
He said Mr Hide's attack was ironic because he claimed to have been at a meeting with Mr Hide and a "fish industry magnate" when there were discussions about a donation to ACT.

Yip that would be true.
And Mr Hide's "crusade" over fish-industry donations was a "little rich" because if the ACT leader was "really interested in corrupt behaviour in the fishing industry", he should focus on a submission Mr Meurant had prepared for Mr Peters during the scampi inquiry.

Yes Rodney and I have discussed this as length. And at the time he just refsued to believe that the corruption allegations had any substance... We had big arguements about it at the time. I also know that in the last few weeks he has personally apologised to the scampi rebels for not believing them.

The submission alleged corruption and mismanagement occurred as hoki quota was introduced, and cost New Zealand "conservatively $1 billion", Mr Meurant said.
"During preparation of the document I received a direct and menacing threat from a powerful fish industry figure: `I'm warning you. Leave hoki alone'," Mr Meurant alleged the person said.

Well I wonder who that is...... and yes we really do know...

He was disappointed that in spite of Mr Peters "promising" to "root out corruption in the fish industry" when he tabled the document, Mr Peters "appears to have failed to make good this pledge".

Someone will be sweating buckets in the South Island this morning - Telecom is gonna make a fortune...

He said Mr Hide had access to the "damning submission" for five years but had done nothing about it.
"Which may put into perspective this burst of enthusiasm just before elections."

See above
Mr Hide said yesterday he believed Mr Meurant's testimony would be so significant that the SFO should "fly to see him if tax reasons are slowing him from coming back".
"This is the best news yet," Mr Hide said.

Yes Bustedblonde feels good today as well...
