WHO WILL REPLACE HELEN?

Our money is on Goff, and King.
Cunliffe is very unpopular in his own caucus - he's known as the teachers pet. That means that he is too close to Helen. So he aint gonna get the support he needs.

It seems he is very unpopular in his own electorate.

King on RadioNZ ruled herself out of a leadership.

They really don't have anyone apart from Goff

Helen Clark will be a hard act to follow. My suggestion would be Maryan Street.

A defining moment for Labour - I hope they choose Street, or that they are forced to because Goff is tossed out over the misuse of the oldies pamphlet with the word "Labour" on it. (Who could have set that up, now?)

That way Key will stand a good chance of doing a Holyoake and get 4 terms for the Nats.

Cunliffe will never reach out to the public as Key does, he does not have the same appeal. Goff is my guess, for now anyway. Fantastic result, pretty much what I expected, and Act are the stars of the night! Oh, how sweet the victory must be, I have loathed the last three years, how galling the last election result was!

It cannot be Cunliffe - he is not welcome in Hawkes Bay so Goff is the only option.

What about Dalzell instead of King?

Goff lost a lot of his support base yesterday - many of the departing Labour MP's are conservative males. By contrast, Labour's list newcomers all carry Helen Clark's seal of approval, and are likely to move Labour further left. And as pdm notes, Cunliffe is unpopular in Hawkes Bay, and still has a date with the High Court for the Baygate judicial review, which could render him as damaged goods for a year or two. Dalziel could emerge from the pack - not so sure about Street - she took a pasting in Nelson.
