Hooton and I have been mates for 10 years since the first day I started working for the Nats.

His talent borders on genius, and his somewhat strident and manic demeanor tends to be off putting to many but he has one of the strongest seams of social justice woven into his psyche of any of my good and true friends save for Harry Tam , who sits at the other end of the political spectrum.

Hooton has been under personal attack for the last few days from some of the more venal bloggers, commentators and even the PM criticises him by name. The reason Labour is so scared of him is his genius but what they haven't understood is that genius is fueled by that seam of social justice.

His logic is powerful and his pen has become sharpened with an increasing exposure in all media forms.

But the one thing that I admire about Hooton is he is a good, extremely loyal man who cannot, because it is an anathema to him, abide by corruption.

So the genius frightens the left but it is his simple goodness that will overcome them.
